The Blue Fin Tuna!

This unique fish is one of the fastest species swimming in our oceans, and can grow to 2 meters long!! The Southern Blue Fin tuna which is found in New Zealand waters, can grow into an adult weighing as much as half a ton! It swims in deep ocean water, and although it travels in schools when young, once reaching adulthood the Blue Fin becomes a solitary animal.

What do Blue Fin Tuna eat? In order to grow big and strong, these fish feed on an abundance of smaller sea animals like squid and crustaceans.
Have you eaten this fish?? Blue Fin Tuna is considered one of the tastier fish varieties, known for having a rich flavoursome meat. It can be eaten raw and its reddish flesh is often used for Sushi.

For hundreds of years, this delicious fish has been sought after by fishermen, so much so that a global fishing industry has concentrated on catching this fish in great numbers. The Blue Fin Tuna from the Southern Hemisphere is targeted mainly by countries such as New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Unfortunately, humans have over fished this species, and the remaining numbers of them in the wild is dangerously low.
Although humans love to eat Blue Fin Tuna, we must make sure there is still a healthy populations of them swimming freely in the wild. Otherwise, we could one day see them dissapear completely from our oceans.
