Second-heaviest-land-animal

In the Greek language, my name means "water horse". Whales and Dolphins are my closest living relatives, even though I do not live in the world's oceans. Each year, in my home of Africa, I am responsible for killing more humans than any other animal...

The Hippopotamus!!

I am proud to be the world's second heaviest land animal, and the males of my breed can weigh more than 7000 pounds! Despite my bulky appearance, I am able to run up to 30 miles an hour and love to roam through central and southern Africa. You can usually find me around or in rivers and lakes, and evolution has moved my eyes and ears near the top of my head so that I may keep myself submerged in the cool water.

I am a herbivorous animal, but am rather short tempered and very protective of my surroundings. Unfortunately, my population in the Congo's Virunga National park has dropped dramatically from 29,000 to 800 since the Second Congolese War. I am now listed as a "Vulnerable species".
