Fish Life
DID YOU KNOW...
Whether you live near the ocean or you have to travel far distances to set foot on a beach, perhaps you have been fishing on a lake or river, or thought about all the species of fish that live in our water systems.

There are countless marine animals living in our oceans, as well as thousands of species calling fresh water lakes and rivers home. For centuries, humans have been fishing for recreation and also to feed on the nutritious meat of fish. Spending time near the ocean, swimming and playing in the water has always brought much joy to children and adults alike. However, we have been taking more and more life out of the ocean for our own consumption at a faster rate for many years.
Since the 1970's humans have been eating twice as much seafood as ever before. Fishing is a big part of our world history, and since its beginning, GLOBAL FISHERIES has become a industry that makes billions of dollars every year at the expense of our wild fish populations. The most prized fish species, often called "predatory fish" have declined by 90% over the past 50 years.
Many people around the world working to study and conserve our oceans and its wildlife are convinced human's ever-growing appetite for seafood has left populations of wild fish on the brink of extinction. This means that today we are dealing with parts of the ocean that are nearly empty of fish life.
It is very important that all of us are aware of the struggle fish are having to survive human's impact on their populations and underwater world.
If your family eats seafood, ask your parents to buy 'sustainably' fished products. This seafood will have been caught in a way to consider the fish stocks, and well-being of the animals.
Its also a good idea to find out which types of fish are endangered and try to eat seafood which has populations in healthy numbers.
